The affected hepatocytes (liver cells) in the lobules are forming nodules of regenerating cells around the scar tissue. This gives a cirrhotic liver a knobbly appearance. Heavy alcohol consumption is the most common cause of liver cirrhosis in developed countries. Hepatitis, the inflammation of the liver, may also lead to this condition. Symptoms include mild jaundice, oedema, mental confusion and the vomiting of blood. Magnification unknown.
